The signing ceremony of the US$119,625 grassroots grant contract funded by the Government of Japan for “The Project for Upgrading and Extending the primary school of Hai Phu Commune” was held on June 12 at the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam.

The primary school belongs to Hai Phu commune, Hai Hau district, Nam Dinh province, with a population of 10,400 people and 3,100 households. The household poverty rate is 34%. Agriculture is a major industry at the commune, and main products are rice, fruit trees, live stock and poultry breeding.

The primary school of Hai Phu commune has 1 building with 3 rooms (2 classrooms) constructed in 1968 and 1 building with 3 classrooms constructed in 1970, totalling 5 classrooms used for learning in two shifts. Now the school has become seriously degraded, raising concern about children’s safety.

Under this circumstance, The People’s Committee of Hai Phu Commune has planned to build a new building (8 classrooms) in order to avoid the need to study in shifts to improve primary education in the commune. The Government of Japan has decided to grant aid to purchase necessary materials for the project.
