French Companies Survey Vietnamese, Malaysian Power Sector
A delegation of 8 French businesses came to Malaysia and Vietnam from June 25 to 29, 2012 to participate in the Mission of Discovery of the Electricity Sector organised by UBIFRANCE in Kuala Lumpur, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Vietnam has seen average economic growth of 7 percent per year over the last 20 years, but the demand for electricity, supported by demographic growth, economic development and a proactive policy of electrification, has increased twice as much in the same period. But the demand continues to rise steeply, with an expected average annual increase in consumption of 17 - 20 percent per year from now until 2015, which will require an increase in generation capacity of 75 GW by 2020 and 146.8 GW by 2030 (according to Electricity Master Plan VII). The Vietnamese electricity industry is dominated by hydropower (40 percent of installed capacity) but coal, oil and gas are also used.
French businesses had direct meetings with EVN, PetroVietnam Power, Vinacomin, the Energy Directorate under the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Institute of Energy, and presented their products and services to main actors in this sector in Vietnam through individual meetings.
