Although market watchdogs in Ho Chi Minh City have unearthed and handled many cases of trade fraud, trading smuggled and prohibited goods, and making and selling faked goods, trade fraud in HCM City remains very complicated. Illegally imported goods are being carried into the city through many different ways.
Smuggled imports exceed official imports
The Market Management Department of Ho Chi Minh City said labelling violation is quite popular, specifically unclear information, unclear origin, and imports without sub-label attached. Most counterfeit goods are smuggled from China, including clothes, watches, eyewear, bags, gas, computer inks, sanitary equipment , electrical and electronic equipment, spare parts, hand tools, etc. Some products are made in Vietnam.

Besides, transportation is very sophisticated, making it difficult for the authorities to check and control. For the time being, there are many sources of smuggled goods found in Ho Chi Minh City like road, airway or seaway.

In 2012, market authorities unearthed many cases with huge values like the seizure of television sales service, airborne mobile phone transportation from the north, and faked Lacoste shirt production. Mr Nguyen Van Mon, Head of Cu Chi Market Management Team, said, smuggling in Cu Chi district is very complicated because it adjoins Long An and Tay Ninh provinces. The team has found that smugglers disguise passengers to carry contrabands from one place to another.

Strengthening inspection and control
In 2013, market watchdogs will intensify inspection in six groups of food items managed by the Ministry of Trade and Industry, including wine, beer, soft drinks, processed milk, vegetable oil, processed flour, and starch. They will step up inspection and control and cooperate with other agencies ensure food safety and hygiene, and livestock disease prevention. They will keep an open eye on packed food, dry food, fresh food, smuggled poultry, food with prohibited additives and hazardous elements
To stabilise the market and prevent counterfeited, substandard goods and trade fraud in HCM City, Vice Mayor Nguyen Thi Hong asked market management agencies to equip sufficient knowledge and professional skills to fight against violators.
