Second Technical Forum to Reduce Landslide Disasters
The second Landslide Technical Forum (LTF) is organized on May 8 by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Institute of Transport Science and Technology (ITST), Ministry of Transport (MOT). LTF gathers more than 60 experts from Japan and Vietnam to share ideas and new technology relating landslide, as well as their application in Vietnam.
Topics covered landslide mapping and risk identification, landslide monitoring and early warning of landslides, landslide testing and computer simulation for landslide risk assessment.
“Data have been showing that landslides, which often occur in the rainy season, interrupt activities on the arterial roads. That not only causes significant economic loss but also affects living standards of communities in the mountainous areas of Vietnam. I sincerely hope that with the development of new landslides risk assessment technologies transferred from Japan, Vietnam will be able to manage and reduce landslide disaster” said Senior Representative of JICA Vietnam Office, Mr Okiura Fumihiko.
LTF is a regular activity within a 5-year Technical Cooperation Project for “Development of Landslide Risk Assessment Technology along Transport Arteries in Vietnam”. Started from November 2011, it is conducted under the framework of Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) and includes technical support by JICA and research activities by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). Under the Project, a joint research group between Vietnam and Japan has been set up to conduct collaborative research, in formulating landslide risk maps, and developing guidelines for the application of modern technologies.
