Vietnam Cement Corporation: Continuous Quality Improvement

Involved in the production of building materials, Vietnam Cement Corporation has in the past decade increased its output over 2.3 times and has grown from a few plants to nine enterprises with an output of over 11.4 million tonnes in 2003.

The cement companies have applied new technology, improved product quality and increased competitiveness in the marketplace. In competition, quality is the first consideration. In 1998, the companies implemented the ISO 9000 quality management system and were granted certificates ISO 9002:1994 by Vietnamese and foreign consulting companies. In 2003 and 2004, the companies moved to ISO 9001:2000. The cement plants have improved the packaging and labelling to ensure safe transport and good quality for consumers.

Because cement quality depends on technology, the corporation has increased its investment, improved technology and built new plants using modern technology. The 16,000-strong workforce of the corporation have been well trained and are capable of operating plants of large capacity and modern technology without hiring foreign experts.

The corporation is actively preparing for international economic integration, firstly for the ASEAN free trade area (AFTA). The companies are implementing technology to improve the quality of clinker and cement, reducing production costs, enhancing competitiveness and providing better services for consumers. The increasing quality of cement is helping to improve the implementation of projects. Cement bags bearing the label Vietnam Cement Corporation are of equal quality to TCVN 6260:1997 (equivalent to international standard 679). The modern production line of the corporation ensures good quality, precise weight and low costs. As the transport cost is quite high in the production of cement, the corporation is trying to cut down this factor. It also plans to build more modern plants in the coming time to meet the ever-increasing demand from national construction projects.
