Preserving and Promoting Folk Music Values in Contemporary Society
An international scientific conference on "Preservation and promotion of folk music values in contemporary society" was held in Nghe An province on May 14 and 15, 2014 by the Vietnam Institute of Culture and Arts Studies (VICAS) under the Ministry of Science and Technology in collaboration with the Departments of Science and Technology of Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces.
The event is part of a series of activities organised to advance national nominations for “the Vi, Giam folk music of Nghe Tinh" and submit it to the UNESCO for recognition as the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Vi, Giam folk music was chosen to representative heritages of Vietnam applied for the recognition of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity this year.
With more than 80 presentations, including 16 from international researchers and scientists from Russia, Uganda, the US, China, Belgium, Taiwan, Japan and other countries and territories, the workshop focused on assessing the Vi, Giam folk music values and define values to be preserved and promoted in contemporary society as well as the vitality and transformation of Vi, Giam folk music. International papers on theoretical issues and perspectives in the study of traditional music, folk songs, creativity, innovation and adaptation in other countries will be good lessons for Vietnam to preserve Vi, Giam folk music.
During the conferencing time, delegates visited Vi, Giam teaching classes and clubs in Nghe An province.
Vi, Giam folk music is now bequeathed in 259 villages in Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces. This traditional music plays an important role in the cultural life of local people.
