Alcatel Wishes to Co-operate in Developing 3G and Multimedia Services

Recently, the Alcatel Corporation and the Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Corporation have launched VoIP (voice over IP) and next generation multimedia services in Hanoi under a pilot programme in the Research Institute of Post and Telecommunication.

Multimedia services provided by Alcatel include Multimedia Instant Conferencing (MMIC), IP telephone and IP videophony. The MMIC application allows for web-based booking and control. It enables audiovisual remote meetings among multiple parties as well as PC/web-based conferencing. Apart from business oriented solutions, Alcatel will also demonstrate consumer videophony applications, IP Telephony with SIP Phone terminals. Also, Alcatel has introduced services and solutions of 3G mobile phones and the next generation network (NGN).

Talking with the press about Alcatel’s co-operation plans with Vietnamese telecommunication service suppliers, Etienne Fouques, vice chairman of Alcatel, and general director of Alcatel mobile communication division, said that Alcatel had co-operated with Vietnamese partners to provide added value services and the corporation was piloting 3G services with the VMS MobiFone Company. He went on to say that Alcatel wanted to not only introduce new technologies to telecommunication to co-operate with three GSM service suppliers, VinaPhone, MobiFone and Viettel to develop 3G services.

With sales of EUR 12.5 billion in 2003, Alcatel operates in more than 130 countries. It now holds 70 per cent of the US market and 25 per cent of the Vietnamese market. Alcatel’s development target in the coming time is to strengthen its leading position in piloting NGN and digital subscriber lines (DSL) broadband. Also, it will continue to develop in mobile phone and multimedia services.
