Noi Thuong Cement Company Focuses on Technology Investment

On November 19, the 45th anniversary of the establishment of the Commerce and Tourism Trade Union, Noi Thuong Cement Co., which is affiliated to the Commerce Construction and Installation Company No.1, officially put a new cement production line into operation.

The company's new line of cement production will replace the old one to help increase production capacity with less personnel to meet the increasing needs of the construction market.

Mr. Nguyen Van Chu, Director of Noi Thuong Cement Company said that the total capital for investing in the new line of cement production is some VND8.7 billion (US$0.55 million). The technologies were imported from Taiwan and China. Therefore, they are suitable to production situation of the company in Vietnam.

With the coordination of the Construction Material Consulting Centre, the Construction Material Institute and the Construction Ministry, the contractors successfully completed the project in just over 10 months. The company then ran the production line on a trial basis and achieved good results. The production line reached 80 per cent of the designed capacity, with quality of clinker of 50N per square millimetre.

Also according to Mr. Chu, the success of building the plant has helped the company on its path of moving toward advanced technology, including automatic production. Some detailed items of the invested project have proven their effects with good results. For example, the rolling-tube drier has helped increase the drying capacity from 30 tonnes to 50 tonnes per day. Together with the traditional coal drying with the capacity of around 50 tones to 70 tones per day, this kind of drying has helped supply enough materials for production in every kind of weather. It has turned out PC40 cement to meet the demand of many construction works.

With this new technology, the three 25-year-old grinding machines that had a capacity of 2 tonnes per hour have been replaced by the new grinding technology, with a capacity of nine tonnes per hour. The four old furnaces that had a total capacity of 20,000 tonnes per year were also replaced with new ones with a capacity of 45,000 tonnes per year. The old material-transporting system was also replaced by a new automatic system.

In doing so, the Noi Thuong Cement Company has pushed up the progress of production, saved money and reduces its labour force. Moreover, the production environment of the whole company has become more controlled. For many years now, due to poor production conditions, the density of dirt and smoke was rather high. Now, the situation has been improved tremendously, so that the working environment is better and this in turn helps increase productivity.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Toan, General Director of Building Installing Company No.1, the mother company of Noi Thuong Cement Company, said that the investment on new technology has helped increase the company's revenue. After just 11 months of probation operation, the revenue of the company has increased by some 19.2 per cent compared with 2003  reaching around VND339 - 340 billion (US$21.6 million). However, according to several officials from the Ministry of Trade, the achievement is just the starting point of a long-term development toward quality oriented large scale production. The long-term strategy of the Noi Thuong Cement Company to the year 2010 and beyond is that the company will continue investing in new advanced technologies to meet the domestic and international markets' needs.
