Vietnam Imports Electricity from China

Vietnam will buy between 100-130 million kWh of electricity from China in 2005 following a deal signed in Hanoi on December 4 between Power Company No.1 (PC1) under Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) and the Guangxi Power Grid Company under the southern Chinese power grid company.

The deal states that 25 MW of electricity will be transferred from the Shengou 110KV-power transmission station in Guangxi province to the Mong Cai 110 KV station in northern Quang Ninh province, starting from May 1st next year. The electricity will serve the daily life and production in the Quang Ninh province.

The PC1 will look for partners with other Chinese counterparts in electricity production and trading, especially in hydropower projects, as this deal will expire on December 21, 2006, said the company director Nguyen Phuc Vinh.

The EVN in November increased the electricity purchase by 48.8 per cent against the previous month to serve the demand for additional charge, according to EVN officials.

In the first eleven months, Vietnam's commercial electricity output rose by 13.5 per cent on-year mainly due to the increase in electricity demand for the sectors of industry, construction and people's daily use.

The country has so far this year generated some 40.1 billion kWh of electricity, up 12.7 on-year, the officials said.
