The Waste Management and Environmental Improvement Department under the Vietnam Environment Administration (VEA) recently organised a workshop on strengthening the capacity of controlling illegal trade in waste and chemicals in Hanoi. The workshop aimed to strengthen the capacity of officials in charge of controlling illegal trade in wastes and chemicals and expand cooperation with countries in the Asia - Pacific region in controlling illegal cross-border trade in wastes and chemicals.

Illegal cross-border transportation of wastes and chemicals has become a global environmental problem and posed serious threats to the environment and human health in developing countries, especially in Asia, one of major destinations of wastes. About 1 million tonnes of electronic wastes were illegally transported to Asian countries, including Vietnam. Therefore, finding out effective measures to strictly control the illegal transportation and trade of wastes and chemicals across borders is an urgent need in the current period.

Taking place on October 6 and 7, 2014, the workshop was an opportunity for relevant agencies to discuss and propose solutions and recommendations for better implementation of international conventions and Vietnam’s laws on illegal import and export of wastes and chemicals in Vietnam.
