EMIC - A Famous Trademark Amongst Electric Measuring Instruments

Electric Measuring Instrument Company (EMIC) under the Ministry of Industry's Electric Technical Instrument Corporation is specialised in producing high and low-voltage electric measuring instruments such as one and three-phase electric meters, electrical clocks with one- and three-phase voltmeters, ampere meters, frequency meters, low- and medium-voltage adapters, and transformers.

EMIC made a breakthrough when it received technical secret transfer from the Switzerland's Landis & Gyr Group in 1995. The company's products, therefore, fulfil international quality standards set by International Electro-technical Commission (IEC) and have gained domestic consumers' confidence. EMIC supplies most of the products for the electricity sector during its development process. Its products are exported to the United States, Russia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Butan, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar with a year-on-year increase in export value.

2004 is a year of great challenges for Vietnam's economy in general and electric measuring instrument company in particular. The prices for input materials of steel, iron, plastic and others is continually soaring, which adversely affects production and business activities. Notwithstanding this, EMIC must still ensure stable output with competitive prices. Moreover, consumers always have strict requirements for the instruments, which must be accurate, and under long term warranty. This year also marks EMIC's conversion from a State-owned company into State-run one-member limited liability company. Thus, it has to spend much of its time instructing its staff to learn new procedures and follow this alteration positively.

In spite of numerous difficulties, over the past year, EMIC has reaped many achievements. As of November 2004, the company's industrial production value accomplished 93.45 per cent of the plan set for the year. Of which, one-phase meters fulfilled 97.39 per cent, ampere meter 85 per cent, low-voltage pole 107.47 per cent, and high-voltage 146.18 per cent. It gets total revenues of 101.31 per cent and earns US$600,000 from export (which is only a small proportion in its total revenue but an encouraging figure). Until the end of this year, the company has strived to exceed 8 per cent and increase its revenue by 8-10 per cent against the plan set for the whole year.

"The success is attributed to the fact that the company board of directors promptly prepared material supply contracts, and ensured the products' quality is steadily strengthened and meets technical requirements with reasonable prices, enabling it to build up a good trademark and maintain stability in the market', said the company director Ho Dinh Nam.

EMIC's export markets keep growing. The company has actively taken part in international auctions to offer electric instruments and had great success, such as the big bidding package to provide 52,000 meters to Laos.

Seeing trademark as an intrinsic part in its development strategy, EMIC has mapped out a long-term scheme to protect its trademark by registering copyright, brand and logo at the Intellectual Property Department. Additionally, the company habitually introduces products via its outlets based in all 64 provinces and cities nationwide and has joined in annually held large-scale trade fairs named Vietnamese High-quality Products, international fair on industrial goods, etc. to boost its trademark.

EMIC has made full use of the website www.etc.com.vn/emic with more than 6,000 users to date. The company as a whole has shown great unity, which has helped to form its strengths. Its labourers have the freedom and right to give ideas on business and investment matters.

In the coming years, to keep pace with the country in the entry to ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) and World Trade Organisation (WTO), EMIC is determined to keep it as high-quality electric instrument supplier, stabilise the price of its products and further expand its export market. According to Mr. Nam, to this end, EMIC as well as other companies are in need of stronger support from Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and foreign embassies acting as a crucial link between local enterprises and the international community.
