Recently, in Kunming, China, ministers and senior officials attending the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Seventh Economic Corridors Forum ) Seventh agreed on measures to promote the development of economic corridors in order to facilitate trade and traffic among countries, promoting the cooperation and participation of private sectors.
GMS includes six countries: Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.
The theme of this year’s forum is "Promoting effective collaboration for the future of the GMS Economic Corridors". In addition to ministers, senior officials at all levels of six GMS countries, the forum was attended by representatives of the GMS Business Forum and others partners and organisations.
At the forum, representatives from the GMS countries discussed issues and challenges which still exist since the last meetings, including reducing non-tariff barriers, improving technological infrastructure connections, accelerating the deployment of the Agreement to facilitate for conveying people and goods across the borders among countries of the expanded Mekong Sub-region, developing special economic zones at some points of the transport corridor.
Mr Stephen Groff, Vice President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) said: "The GMS leaders have a strong commitment that their countries will promote trade, tourism, industries and other economic activities along the GMS economic corridor. The development of the new special economic zones, the support for e-commerce and other activities conducted after the forum will have a big impact to businesses and communities at each GMS country. "
In a joint statement, the ministers and senior officials of the six GMS countries have called for a program of action to facilitate trade and transport in order to facilitate the flow of goods and the movement of people among countries and called for a coordinated approach in the development of urban areas in the region.
The ministers and senior officials also support the GMS cross-country e-commerce cooperation framework with the aim of promoting the development of electronic commerce through sharing consumer goods market.
The GMS representatives also stressed on the importance of promoting trade through the further development of economic corridors in which focuses on some particular areas. The representatives noted the importance of having the participation of local governments, local communities and private sectors in the development of the economic corridors.
