The Dresner Bank Group has approximately 1,050 branches and about 35,000 FTE in roughly 60 countries around the world. In terms of total assets and customer numbers, it is one of the largest banks in Europe. Since 2001, Dresner Bank has been a wholly owned subsidiary of the Allianz Group. The combination of Allianz and Dresner Bank offers customers substantial added value in the form of a wide range of insurance and finance products, a large number of sales channels and additional advisory capacity and expertise.

The Dresner Bank focuses on 2 target groups: Private as well as business clients and large and corporate customers. Dresner Bank's goal is, together with Allianz, to become one of the best suppliers of integrated financial solutions for its customers- locally, nationally and internationally.

Established in May 1995, the bank’s representative office in Hanoi acts as a partner, not competitor of the Vietnamese banks. Account relationships are maintained with the major Vietnamese banks and financing of import-export transactions between Vietnam and Germany is provided. In addition German companies with an interest to enter the Vietnamese market are advised on business opportunities and the economic environment in Vietnam. VIB Forum had an interview with Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai Lan, Deputy Chief of Representative Office in Hanoi.

What do you think about the Vietnamese financial market?

With the establishment of the country's first stock exchange in Ho Chi Minh City in July 2000 Vietnam has taken the first step towards providing an additional source of long-term financing for corporations in Vietnam. While this stock market is still in its early stages it has an enormous growth potential when you look at the number of state- owned companies waiting to be equitised.

So On Dresner Bank side, what is your plan to develop the business in Vietnam in the near future?

Dresner Bank AG has been very active providing training facilities in Vietnam and abroad to the State Bank of Vietnam and the state- owned commercial banks to familiarize their staff with modern banking products and working procedures. We believe that the close cooperation between Dresner Bank AG and the Vietnamese banks is to the benefit of both sides and will foster and expand our relations in the years to come.

According to the opinion of foreign investors in the Vietnamese market, the most difficulties are caused by Vietnamese policies. Based on your own idea, what are your comments on this?

Similar to other foreign investors, we hope for an investor friendly environment together with a further improvement of the legal environment.

The 2-price policy still exists differentiating between foreign and domestic investors. We believe that all foreign investors should be able to enjoy the same fair and competitive investment environment. Last but not least, we feel that an efficient, lean bureaucracy will help to foster foreign direct investments.
