The Prime Minister recently approved a bridge construction programme in ethnic minority areas in the 2014 - 2020 period, aiming to create favourable travelling conditions for local people in remote areas and ethnic minority areas.

The programme will be implemented in 5,237 communes in 450 districts in 50 provinces and cities with mountainous areas where ethnic groups live. The programme will also give priority to 63 poor districts defined in Resolution 30a/2008/NQ-CP dated December 27, 2008 of the Government.

In the first phase (2014 - 2015), the programme constructed 186 suspension bridges in 28 mountainous provinces in northern, central and Central Highlands regions. In the second phase (2015 - 2020), all remaining bridges will be built within four years. As planned, by 2020, 3,664 concrete bridges and 295 suspension bridges will be completed.

The total capital of the programme is nearly VND8,339 billion, including VND931.7 billion from central budget (accounting for 11.2 per cent) to build 186 suspension bridges in the first phase, VND5,625 billion from ODA (67.5 per cent), VND1,000 billion from local budget (11.9 per cent), and VND782.28 billion from the society (9.4 per cent).
