PM Asks EVN to Explain New Electricity Price

The Prime Minister has urged the State-run Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) to explain its new way of calculating electricity prices, which confronts wide public protest.

The new way of calculation electricity price is facing strong objection from low-income people. Most of power consumers are keen on old electricity price mechanism because they think the new one cause more losses for them.

According to the new calculation method, households consuming more than 300kWh/month will have to pay at least VND65,000 more a month as of January 1, 2005.

Power consumers expressed their concern over Electricity of Vietnam’s (EVN) accumulated calculations, as they claim that households consuming more than 300kWh/month will suffer from more losses than those consuming less than 300kWh/month.

Besides, consumers wonder where they should buy electricity meters and whether they are forced to buy new meters or not. They want to save power but they now cannot see their power usage to adjust.

EVN needs to urgently set out proper explanations for the Prime Minister, helping solve this hot problem and calm down people’s worries, the PM said.
