Tiger Airways Offers S’pore-Vietnam Flights at US$25

Singapore-based budget carrier Tiger Airways will offer a fare of US$25, tax excluded, for a one-way ticket from Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi to Singapore in early April.

The discount fare is up to 80 per cent cheaper than existing ones, said the carrier CEO Tony Davis at a press conference in Ho Chi Minh City on February 25.

Tiger Airways has recently obtained landing rights to two cities in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City from the Singaporean Aviation authorities. The carrier is now waiting for the permission from Vietnam’s Bureau Civil Aviation to officially launch its first budget flight to Vietnam in early April, he added.

Tiger Airways’ low-cost flights offer Vietnamese a “good opportunity to travel abroad, not only to Singapore but also to Malaysia and Indonesia,” stressed the carrier CEO.

Also, such discount flights will bring more tourists to Vietnam and help develop the country’s tourism, he said.

Mr Davis said the airline had the capacity to service the route, after taking delivery of two more aircraft this month to bring its fleet to four.

Tiger Airways opened an office in Hanoi in late January.

Tiger Airways is now in competition with an array of budget airlines, including Singapore-based Valuair, Qantas-backed Jetstar Asia and Malaysia's AirAsia.

There are 10,300 Singaporean tourists visiting Vietnam in January and February this year, up 73.7 per cent on year, according to Vietnam's statistical figures. (thanhniennews Feb25, Econet Feb 28 p2)
