VMS to Invest $145Mln Improving MobiFone's Capacity

Vietnam's second largest mobile phone operator VMS plans to invest $145 million this year to improve the capacity of its MobiFone network, a corporate official said Monday.

With the investment, VMS will install two more switchboards, 728 transceivers and 27 base station controllers across the country, the official said.

The move will raise the network's capacity from the current 3.5 million lines to 4.9 million lines.

MobiFone, which uses GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) technology, has so far signed up 2.4 million subscribers. It targets to sign up 1.5 million new subscribers and earn total revenues of VND5,500 billion ($350 million) this year.

VMS is a $200-million business cooperation contract signed between the Vietnam Post & Telecoms Corp. and the Comvik International Vietnam Co. (CIV) under Sweden's Kinnevik Group in 1995.
