The ASEAN Community was established in 2015, becoming a "good home" for people in the region, where peoples live in peace, stability, cooperation and development. The development path of ASEAN over the past 20 years has registered Vietnam's contribution. “Vietnam's role as ASEAN Chairmanship in 2020 is important, both as a responsibility and an opportunity to enhance Vietnam's position and role regionally and internationally. 2020 is also a year with many great milestones for both Vietnam and ASEAN,” Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc stressed.

Vietnam wishes to continue to contribute substantially to the process of building and developing the ASEAN solidarity and raising a central role in the region, towards a harmonious, cohesive, increasingly prosperous and adaptable ASEAN closely engaged in solving global problems. Vietnam will work its best to make the ASEAN Chairmanship Year 2020 a success.

Prime Minister urged related agencies to work hard to fulfill the ASEAN Chairman's responsibility for 2020 with three successes: success in content, success in ensuring security, safety, respect for reception, and success in promoting Vietnamese image, identity, country and people amongst the ASEAN Community.
