Metro Cash & Carry to Build More Wholesale Centers in Vietnam

German supermarket chain operator Metro Cash & Carry has a plan to build a new wholesale center in Hanoi and another in Hai Phong City this year, a corporate official said.

"Metro Cash & Carry Vietnam has so far invested US$60 million in building four centers in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Can Tho City," said chief executive Patrick Legro.

At its current centers, Metro cash & Carry has its own farm produce and seafood processing and preserving equipment. There are 280 products trademarked Metro being sold at these centers.

Metro Cash & Carry Vietnam secured total revenues of US$50 million in 2004.

Metro was licensed in 2002 to invest US$120 million in building eight wholesale centers in Vietnam. So far, four of the centers have been built, including one in Hanoi, two in Ho Chi Minh City and one in Can Tho City.

"We have not yet started making profits in Vietnam, but we hope to break even when our fifth center becomes operational," said Patrick.
