Bac Lieu province features the cultural intersection of the Kinh, Khmer and Hoa ethnic groups that give it a unique cultural identity - a huge advantage in tourism development.

Impressive destination

Bac Lieu province received about 984,000 visitors in the first six months of 2018, up 9.82% year on year, including 305,000 tourists who used accommodation services and 22,500 foreign travelers. Hotel and restaurant revenue reached VND292 billion. Currently, the province has 182 accommodation facilities with nearly 3,000 rooms, including three hotels. The quality of accommodation facilities has been increasingly improved. Bac Lieu has also maintained and promoted nine tourist sites recognized as typical tourist destinations of the Mekong Delta by the Mekong Delta Tourism Association. Every year, the province also joins in 4-5 tourism fairs in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and other provinces to form joint tours, particularly with southwest localities. Bac Lieu regularly hosts typical national and international cultural and sporting events such as amateur singing and art festivals, volleyball, tennis, petanque and boat racing tournaments.

“Besides, the province has strengthened tourism marketing to bring its potential into full play. Bac Lieu has focused on water-borne tourism, garden tourism, spiritual cultural tourism, community-based tourism and MICE. While cooperating with other localities, it still retains its own distinctive features and unique products. Thus, Bac Lieu has always been an impressive destination for tourists from far and wide, especially those from central and northern provinces,” said Ms. Cao Xuan Thu Van, Director of the Bac Lieu Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Personnel is always the core value for the industry to affirm its position. So, improving employee knowledge and skills is a central direction. At the same time, the province has concentrated investment on upgrading tourist attractions and routes, planned shopping places and parking areas, combined tourism with new future industries like wind power and high-tech agricultural park, and pressed the completion of important routes from Bac Lieu City to Nha Mat - Hiep Thanh and Truc Lam Zen Monastery.

Promoting cultural values

Bac Lieu has many unique cultural and religious festivals that attract tourists every year, such as Nam Hai Quan Am Festival, Da Co Hoai Lang Festival, Nghinh Ong Festival and Noc Nang Field Festival. In 2019, the province will host three national sports tournaments: Vietnam Tourism Tennis Tournament, National Petanque Championship and National Championship Volleyball Tournament. The province will focus on organizing the Culture and Tourism Week together with the 100th anniversary of Da Co Hoai Lang (Night Drum Beats Causes Longing for Absent Husband), celebrate the 100-year Bac Lieu Dude Mansion, and organize Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival in December. The department has also paid attention to museum, library, film and book publication projects.

To make a breakthrough development, completing tourism infrastructure, investing in tourism product development and utilizing economic potential and cultural identity is necessary. “In particular, we respect and promote the creative labor role of every citizen, create a driving force for sustainable development, especially cultural, sporting, fitness and family programs. Public consensus is a universal key to elevate Bac Lieu tourism to new highs on the integration path,” she stressed.

Bac Lieu has been long known for its fertile soil and multiple cultures. With its liberal, industrious, creative people, Bac Lieu has become a more dynamic province and a leading light on the country’s economic landscape.
