Coffee Prices Fall Slightly

The price of coffee beans in the central highlands province of Dak Lak, Vietnam's largest coffee growing area, showed a downturn of Robusta coffee to around VND14,500 a kilo, on March 22, losing VND1,500 a kilo in 2 days ago.

The coffee bean prices have slightly fallen in recent days, however they are still VND5,000 a kilo higher compared to early March. The prices of Moka coffee stood high at VND30,000 a kilo in Dak Lak and VND37,000 in Bao Loc due to insufficient supply.

“Besides the available stockpiles for exports, we can not buy any Moka coffe volume on market,” said Ngo Tan Giac, Director of Dak lak-based Thu Ha Coffee Company. Meanwhile, according to Huu Lam, senior official at the Tam Chau Firm, local farmers have sold all their coffee beans thanks to increased prices in early months and no more stockpiles remain.

Coffee traders forecast that prices of Vietnamese coffee beans will grow to VND20,000 a kilo this crop and the export indexes will be as high as $1,000 a ton. “However, the prices may also stand firm at the current level,” Lam said.

Vietnam shipped around 172,000 tons of coffee worth $115 million in the first two months of this year, representing a decrease of 5.2% on-year in volume and 4.2% on-year in value.
