The international wood and handicraft EXPO 2005 is expected to bring in satisfactory successes because the trade fair is becoming more professional and more attractive to participants. On the verge of the opening ceremony, reporters from the Vietnam Business Forum Magazine (VIB Forum) recorded some useful ideas from handicraft and wood producing and processing enterprises who attended the fair.

Mr. JUICHI TAKEUCHI, general director of Asahi Group, Japan
Japan-headquartered ASAHI is a leading firm in wood trading, production and processing with major factories in Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and other countries. In Vietnam, ASAHI set up the A&M Co., Ltd to export wood products manufactured by AA and Truong Thanh. Recently, ASAHI invested $1.5 million to build a wood-processing factory to make sofas, cabinets and furniture in Dong An Industrial Park in southern Binh Duong Province. The first reason for A&M Co., Ltd to build the wood-processing factory in Vietnam is that A&M has quite a large export capacity, with some 20 containers a month, including 80 per cent for the Japanese market and 20 per cent for the Vietnamese market. Secondly, A&M’s products can meet the requirements of the Japanese market because the A&M factory has Japanese wood-drying technology and a skilful and laborious workforce.

Mr. Duong Duc Hoa, director of FORIMEX
FORIMEX is famous for high quality, eye-catching and reliable exterior woodwork. Currently, FORIMEX is developing attractive and durable interior furniture. The FORIMEX trademark has secured a strong foothold in the local and international markets for many years. As for the growth rate, from 1993 to 1999, FORIMEX had an annual turnover of less than VND10 billion (US$625,000), an average on-year increase of 7 per cent. However, the company’s revenues hit VND30 billion (US$1.88 million) from 1990 to 2000 and reached VND120 billion (US$7.5 million) in 2004. In 2005, FORIMEX expects aggregate revenues of VND130 billion (US$8.13 million), up 10-13 per cent on year. FORIMEX has a skilful and experienced workforce. In addition, FORIMEX also specializes in raising and trading crocodiles and importing and exporting crocodile skins. These are important steps for FORIMEX in anticipation of when it goes public, reforming its structure and entering the world market.

Mr Huynh Van Bau, director of Saigon Furniture:
In recent years, wood products have become one of Vietnam’s major exports. Wooden interiors and exteriors made by Vietnamese firms are assessed as Vietnamese high quality products. In the meantime, Vietnamese enterprises have a very wide range of premium products that can meet the demands of all customers. Building strong trademarks and applying international standards have helped enterprises to affirm their footholds in the world market. Therefore, in order to boost wood product exports, supports from State responsible agencies are inevitable. At the same time, HAWA and enterprises also need to boost their cooperation during global economic integration.

Mr. Hoang Vu, deputy general director of SAVIMEX:
SAVIMEX has been one of the leading wood exporters in Vietnam in recent years. SAVIMEX is one of five enterprises having monthly wood export revenues of over US$2 million. SAVIMEX, set up over 20 years ago, always has its own stable development strategy and always prioritises the improvement of its product quality. Since 1998, SAVIMEX has applied Japanese standards, ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001 quality management standards. The company was one of the first wood companies to receive these certificates. At the same time, SAVIMEX also bought state-of-the-art production lines to process wood for export. For example, the company has precision shaping machines, digital shavers and digital painters. SAVIMEX also has a skilled and experienced workforce. It has sent over 100 labourers to study in Japan. Currently, SAVIMEX can export more than 120-150 forty-foot containers of furniture a month, earning a monthly turnover of US$2 million.

Ms Nguyen Thi My Van, director of An An Co.
I am always thirsty for introducing products bearing Vietnamese cultural characteristics to the world. After a long time working for several foreign companies, I discovered that many countries liked Vietnamese wooden clogs very much. Therefore, I decided to devote to heightening the value of the wooden clogs. I can design numerous variants from the simple clogs of the Vietnamese tradition. I researched and used many kinds of materials to make the unique pairs of Vietnamese clogs. In order to pave the way for the Vietnamese traditional clogs to easily penetrate overseas markets, I had surveyed psychology, custom, habits and tastes of individual countries to make their favourite models. By successfully combining othe Vietnamese traditional straits and foreign tastes, An An is conquering the world. In a short course of time, An An will invest in renewing technologies, expanding production capacity and improving product quality. Apart from export, An An will also increase its sales in the domestic market by introducing favourite products.
