10 Top ICT Events in 2022

The ICT Press Club recently announced 10 outstanding information and communication technology (ICT) events of Vietnam in 2022.


Samsung inaugurates a US$200 million R&D Center in Hanoi

1. The Prime Minister launched the National Strategy on Digital Economy and Digital Society to 2025, with a vision to 2030. This strategy envisions the digital development driven by digital technology and digital data, becoming one of the new mainstream development methods for Vietnam to achieve rapid, sustainable and inclusive development, resiliently adapting to challenges in the unpredictable world.

The government expects that the digital economy will account for 20% of GDP by 2025 and 30% by 2030.

2. The Prime Minister issued the Directive on the development of e-government and digital government and the acceleration of national digital transformation. Accordingly, the PM instructed central and local agencies to inform and enhance thorough knowledge of all organizations and individuals to ensure information security and efficiency, and deploy a productive Intelligent Operations Center (IOC) system.

Vietnam will develop and employ national digital platforms for digital transformation and for the development of digital government, digital economy and digital society. The country will move to cloud computing platforms and prioritize professional services. It will deploy or pilot implementation of a general data processing and analysis platform at ministerial and provincial levels, thus helping create new information, and new data services for e-government and digital government.

The Government also requested related bodies to coordinate with the Ministry of Public Security, the Government Office, and the Ministry of Information and Communications to prepare the infrastructure to connect national databases, specialized databases, and information systems for the settlement of administrative procedures with the National Population Database, first of all, databases on business, tax, customs, banking, driving license, health insurance, education and social security, according to the assigned schedule.

3. The National Assembly voted for the draft Law on Radio Frequency in order to strictly manage, rationally and effectively allocate the right to use radio frequencies, create a healthy competitive environment in telecommunications activities, promote the development of telecommunications infrastructure, create a foundation for national digital transformation, and gradually develop digital economy and digital society.

4. The Prime Minister signed Decision 505/QD-TTg to adopt October 10 as National Digital Transformation Day to raise public awareness of the benefits of digital transformation; foster the participation of the political system and the people in digital transformation.


VinFuture Prize honors scientists who invented the global network

5. VinFuture Prize honored scientists including Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee, Dr. Vinton Gray Cerf, Dr. Emmanuel Desurvire, Dr. Robert Elliot Kahn and Professor Sir David Neil Payne for their groundbreaking inventions in global connectivity network technology.

Global network technology is the result of many great inventions for mankind with the decades-long journey of development and perfection by many generations of scientists to create the foundation of the knowledge economy and the launch pad for the next breakthrough technologies such as artificial intelligence, internet of things, cloud computing and big data.

6. FPT manufactured chips, listing Vietnam among the few countries in the world that could make chips. The integrated semiconductor chip is designed and structured by FPT semiconductor engineers for specific industries and products. The finished design in Vietnam is transferred to the factory located in South Korea for production and packaging.

7. Some carriers started turning off 2G and 3G signals. Viettel is the first operator in Vietnam to turn off the nationwide 3G network with 35,000 base transceiver stations (BTS).

Turning off 2G and 3G waves helps operators to focus their resources for better services on the 4G network in the context of increasing traffic and 4G data subscribers.

8. For the first time, network operators simultaneously joined hands to block spam calls. The Ministry of Information and Communications affirmed that it will resolutely inspect and publicly sanction network operators who do not seriously handle subscribers spreading spam calls.

9. Samsung inaugurated a US$200 million R&D Center in Hanoi. This is Samsung's largest hub in Southeast Asia.

Samsung plans to develop its R&D Center in Vietnam into the No. 1 R&D center globally by strengthening partnerships with universities in key technology areas of the future like improving expertise in core technology research of mobile devices (multimedia and security), enhancing research and development capacity to achieve technological autonomy in artificial intelligence (AI), big data and internet of things (IoT).

10. For the first time, the Blockchain Summit was held in Vietnam, attracting thousands of attendants, speakers and top-notch experts in the world and in Vietnam (like Kyber Network, Gala Games, Sky Mavis, DFG, FTX, Binance and BNB Chain).

According to Fortune Business Insights, the global blockchain market is valued at US$4.67 billion in 2021, and is expected to reach US$7.18 billion in 2022, and US$163.83 billion in 2029, with a compound annual growth rate of 56.3% during this period.

Vietnam is considered a bright spot on the world map with a large number of blockchain projects and a high level of blockchain human resources. Many projects built by Vietnamese people have become symbols and attracted great attention and investment from organizations and individuals around the globe.
