Vietnam to Import up to 2.5 Mln Tons of Steel Ingots Next Year

Vietnam may import between 2.1-2.5 million tons of steel ingots in 2006 to meet the demand by domestic steel firms, according to the Ministry of Industry.
 
Next year new domestic steel ingot production factories will be put into operation, raising the total output of locally-made steel ingots to 1.92 million tons, up 122 per cent against 2005. Of the total, the Vietnam Steel Corporation will produce 850,000 tons.
 
The total rolled steel output will reach 3.85 million tons next year, up 20.47 per cent on-year, while the domestic consumption is estimated at 3.8-3.9 million tons.
 
The capacity of local steel firms now stands at 5.61 million tons of steel per year, according to the ministry.
