General Baril Leads Mine Action Team to Visit Vietnam
A Mine Action Team led by General Maurice Baril, former Chief of the Defence Staff of the Canadian Defence Forces and Special Advisor to Canada's Ambassador for Mine Action will start a five-day visit to Vietnam from November 12 -16, 2005.
General Baril will be accompanied by LCol John MacBride, Defence Advisor and Specialist on Stockpile Destruction, Verification/Compliance and Technologies, Mine Action and Small Arms Team, and Sumita Dixit, Program Coordinator, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, Mine Action and Small Arms Team. The delegation will hold meetings with senior officials in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs and Committees of the National Assembly, as well as with NGOs from November 14 – 16, 2005.
The purpose of the visit is to foster dialogue with the Vietnamese Government and non-governmental organizations on the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction (also known as the Ottawa Convention).
