Vietnam Eyes US$4Bln from Seafood Exports by 2010
The fisheries sector plans to earn US$4 billion from seafood exports by 2010, Deputy Fisheries Minister Nguyen Thi Hong Minh announced at a seminar on a seafood export development program till 2010 and vision 2020 in Hanoi on December 5.
Building a system for seafood distribution abroad, regulating seafood supplies in major markets, actively conducting artificial production of healthy and high quality breeds, and ensuring food hygienic safety at processing enterprises were discussed at the seminar.
According to Minh, the program is in line with the sector’s practical development in the new period which aims to ensure both food hygienic safety and market demand, while pursuing effective and sustainable development of the sector’s production and trade.
Up to December 5, the country has so far earned US$2.5 billion from seafood exports, representing an on-year rise of 14.7 per cent and fulfilling the yearly target 25 days ahead of schedule, the Fisheries Ministry reported.
The increase was attributed to European customers' shift to seafood products from poultry products for fear of the bird flu pandemic.
Vietnam’s seafood products are now suitable in 105 countries and territories all over the world. Currently, 171 enterprises have been licensed to export their products to the EU, 295 enterprises to the Republic of Korea, and 300 to the US.
