Vietnam to Request for Fairness in EC Anti-dumping Lawsuit
Vietnam’s Ministry of Trade (MoT) will request the European Committee (EC) to be fair in the dumping lawsuit against Vietnamese leather shoes based on the country’s industry information.
The ministry made the announcement at a press briefing in Hanoi on December 9 as the EC said no companies in the country's leather and footwear industry can satisfy its criteria of a market economy.
The EC released the verdict after a two-month investigation into 115 Vietnamese shoes makers.
The verdict called for a whopping 130 per cent tariff rate on Vietnam’s shoe products.
“Eighty percent of Vietnamese footwear exporters have outsourcing contracts for foreign companies. They have not directly exported goods to the EU. They are not involved in all production phases,” said chairman of the Vietnam Leather and Footwear Association (Lefaso), Pham Gia Thao.
“Therefore, it is impossible to say that Vietnamese companies have dumped their product on the European Union markets,” Mr. Thao said.
Five EC-set criteria for recognition as a market economy include business operation costs within a market, international standard accounting, the exchange rate, laws on bankruptcy and property, and the uncontrollability of the former subsidized economic system.
