The Ministry of Industry (MoI) has submitted to the Prime Minister for approval a plan to boost industrial production in seven northern provinces that border China until 2010 and a vision to 2020, local media reported.

Accordingly, the plan will be carried out in Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Lang Son and Quang Ninh.

Under the plan, Dien Bien province will build medium-and small-sized hydroelectricity plants, give priority to developing the processing industry, particularly agro-forestry processing, and set up concentrated material zones. Industrial centers will be set up in Muong Nhe district and Sin Thau national border gate to attract investment.

Lai Chau will focus on exploiting rare earth, iron, lead and tin ores and build industrial zones in Phong Tho, Sin Ho and Muong Te districts to serve the production of ores, cement and paper.

Lao Cai province will also develop mineral exploitation and production, and agro-forestry processing for exports to Yunnan province of China.

Lang Son will develop agro-forestry processing, double the capacity of coal exploitation and develop the Na Duong thermal power plant.

Quang Ninh will focus on processing seafood and farm produce to export to China. The province currently contributes 85 per cent of industrial production value to the total value of the seven provinces.
