Vietnam and Indonesia agreed to boost bilateral cooperation in the areas of politics, economics, trade and investment during a meeting between the Indonesian President and the visiting Vietnamese Prime Minister in Jakarta on Wednesday.
The two leaders agreed on assigning their Ministries of Foreign Affairs to quickly design the 2006-2010 plan of action to lay a firm foundation for the two countries to effectively implement their Joint Declaration.
They reached a consensus in creating a more attractive and favorable environment for cooperation in trade and investment cooperation as well as in agro-forestry and fisheries, mining, oil and gas, energy, healthcare, culture, tourism, education-training, security and defense, and environmental protection.
Bilateral cooperation was also agreed in the fight against terrorism, trans-national crimes, bird flu epidemics and natural disasters.
The two leaders also agreed to support Indonesia’s bid to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in the 2007-2008 term and for Vietnam in the 2008-2009 term.
Vietnamese PM Phan Van Khai and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono were unanimous in holding the fourth session of the Joint Committee for Economic and Trade Cooperation in Hanoi. They also applauded the signing of an agreement on tourism cooperation between the Vietnam Administration of Tourism and the Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
They also reiterated their commitments to support the establishment of the ASEAN community, with security-political cooperation, economic cooperation and cultural-social cooperation being the three major factors for its development.
On the same day, PM Phan Van Khai met with Vice Indonesian President Carla Kalla and Speaker of the House of Representatives Agung Laksono.
Vietnam and Indonesia set up official diplomatic relationship in 1955. Annual bilateral trade between the two countries now stands at around 1.14 billion dollars. Indonesia ranks 26th among foreign investors in Vietnam with investment totaling US$140 million.
