The Ministry of Transport has recently assigned the Vietnam Seaport Association (VPA) to conduct a project to improve the quality of communication between seaports with funding from the European Union (EU).

Specifically, the EU will finance the upgrade of communication systems for 40 VPA members in order to boost Vietnam-EU imports and exports.

Up to 74 out of 100 seaports nationwide own certificates meeting the ISPS Code standards, which are often granted with regard to international law on ship and port security, said the VPA, adding that 203 vessels have been named in the list of ship security plan.

In addition, 1,200 seaport security officers have acquired training on seagoing vessel security and received certificates on the issue.

According to the director of the Vietnam Maritime Administration, Vuong Dinh Lam, seaports in Vietnam handled 139.2 million tons of cargo last year, a 67.7 per cent increase over 2000.
