The Vietnamese Ministry of Trade will chair meetings of APEC’s e-commerce steering group (ECSG) on e-trade from February 20-23, on the threshold of the 2006 APEC summit scheduled to be held later this year in Vietnam.

The ministry said it would chair a government-enterprise dialogue workshop on non-paper trade for APEC member economies, a sub-group meeting on non-paper trade, a sub-group meeting on protecting personal information, and a whole group meeting on e-trade.

Representatives of government-level offices, enterprises, research institutes, associations of APEC member countries will attend these meetings and workshop.

In recognition of the importance of e-trade in economic development and in increasing the creative dynamism of enterprises, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) already established an e-commerce steering group (ECSG) for e-trade activities of members. ECSG has two sub-groups on non-paper trade and personal information protection.

The US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and Australia are APEC members having high e-trade development levels.

The APEC summit 2006, hosted by Vietnam for the first time, is slated to be attend by all leaders of the organization, including President Bush, Prime Minister Koizumi, Secretary General Hu Jintao.

Founded in November 1989, APEC now has 21 member economies. Vietnam joined the organization at the APEC Foreign-Economic Ministers Meeting in November 1998.
