An aviation agreement between the Governments of Vietnam and Israel was signed in Hanoi on January 25 by Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Tien Sam and Israeli Ambassador to Vietnam Ephraim Ben-Matityau.

The agreement is a legal and technical framework for the launch of direct flights between Vietnam and Israel in the future. This will also be an important event in the aviation relation between the two countries, showing positive signs to boost cooperative relations between the two nations.

The Vietnam-Israel Aviation Agreement will be the 57th agreement among the total of agreements on aviation transportation that Vietnam has penned with other countries and territories in the world.

Vietnam and Israel signed a trade agreement in August 2004, including most favored nation (MFN) conditions, facilitating the trade and economic ties between the two countries.

According to statistics of the Vietnamese customs sector, trade turnover between the two countries reached US$76 million in 2004, with Vietnam’s exports accounting for US$31.6 million and Israel’s exports worth $34.4 million.

Recent years have seen an increase in the number visits made by high-ranking state officials. An official visit to Vietnam by an Israeli telecom delegation was headed by Uri Olenik, General Director of the Ministry of Communications in September 2004; an officials visit to Israel by Diep Kinh Tan, Deputy Prime Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development took place from February 27 to March 2; and mostly recently, a visit to Israel headed by Do Nhu Dinh, deputy Minister of Trade.
