US President Desires to Visit Vietnam Soon
US President George Bush is eagerly awaiting his coming trip to Vietnam in the year 2006, state media quoted Bush as saying in his letter to the conference of Vietnamese students in the US from December 28-31.
“I want to visit Vietnam soon, Vietnam’s economy is emerging and we have made long strides in achieving joint targets,” the leader of the White House said to the scientific conference organized by the US Academy of Science in California.
Bush also reiterated the US’s pledge to help Vietnam prevent HIV/AIDS in the future in his message.
Also, he talked highly of the contributions by Vietnamese students and postgraduate students to US science as well as to the relationship between the two countries.
During the historic tour to the US in June of this year, Prime Minister Phan Van Khai invited Bush to visit Vietnam on the occasion of the APEC Summit in Hanoi to be organized for late next year.
Besides, in 2005 Vietnam and the US witnessed significant progress in bilateral relation. US Deputy Secretary of Trade and largest ever Congress delegation including 7 lawmakers tour Vietnam to boost trade relation.
Furthermore, next month one other bigger delegation of the US congress will also travel to Vietnam.
Vietnam and the US posted bilateral trade of almost US$6.5 billion in 2004. The US is now Vietnam’s largest overseas market, purchasing one-fifth of all Vietnamese exports, however, Vietnam ranks as only the US’s 57th largest overseas market
To date the US ranks as the 11th biggest investor to Vietnam with 249 projects, with a capital of US$1,405 million, US$720 million already disbursed.
