Oracle Corporation is one of successful IT solution providers which had celibrated its ten years of operation in Vietnam. Oracle Indochina General Director Ho Thanh Tung share its experience in Vietnam with Vietnam Business Forum's readers.
Could you share your secrete of your success in Vietnam?
Partnership with both customers and agents. Partners are essential to our business success. Oracle has developed a nation-wide network of 30 agents and partners in Vietnam, including well-known value-added service providers such as FPT and Pythis. Oracle’s business in Vietnam is 100% partner-led and driven, a testimony to the necessity of local partner relationships, expertise and influence to drive Oracle’s business in Vietnam. Our partners are fundamental to our success in Vietnam and they form part of a network of more than 15,000 partners worldwide who are helping to create rich solutions for broader markets, and bring even greater value to customers through solutions that address business needs.
Oracle’s growth in Vietnam has been in no small part also due to the support from some long-standing corporate customers ever since we began operations in Vietnam 10 years ago. The trust we received from pioneering, large customers such as the Ministry of Finance, State Bank of Vietnam, Vietnam Airlines and Industrial and Commercial Bank of Vietnam has been important. Ten years on, we have built from this foundation to have a customer base that includes hundreds of companies across the country including government agencies, large-scale state-owned corporations and crucially, many small and medium enterprises in Vietnam as well.
We support our partners and customers from our offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, providing a variety of quality services, most crucially in education and training. So far, Oracle in Vietnam has trained so far over 5,000 Vietnamese IT experts, of which 400 have obtained the very prestigious Oracle Certified Professional status to support their partners.
Oracle Certifications are among the most sought after badges of credibility for expertise in the Information Technology marketplace. We are seeing Vietnam IT professionals start to really differentiate themselves from their peers or competition and gain valuable job security by earning an Oracle certification.
What are your selected customers and what solutions you had offered to them?
Today, Oracle’s enterprise software products are being used widely in Vietnam among government entities such as the Ministry of Post and Telematics, the Ministry of Public Security, the Taxation Department, and the Department of Customs, as well as businesses in various industries such as Vietnam International Bank, Vietnam Airlines, Savimex, Vincom, Vidotour, and more.
This customer base is using a wide range of Oracle products. For example, Oracle Database is being used at the State Bank’s monetary transmission systems, state treasure and taxation’s accounting systems and telephone service providers’ charge counting systems. Oracle Fusion Middleware, especially Oracle Portal, is being used at government ministries. Oracle Applications such as Oracle Financials, is being used in leading Vietnamese businesses including Vietnam Airlines and Vinamilk.
In addition, Oracle Financials is being deployed in the Ministry of Finance’s public finance management project that covers 600 districts of 64 cities and provinces of Vietnam involving 14,000 public servants. Oracle’s solutions for the mid-market, such as the Oracle E-Business Suite Special Edition, are being used by leading companies such as Bibica to transform their business.
What are the other measurements to retain Oracle’s strong position in Vietnam?
We contribute our effort to cultivate the market by our community development program. Oracle Vietnam brought the highly successful Oracle Academic Initiative (OAI) program to Vietnam in 2004, bringing Oracle-based IT education and assistance to Vietnam university students. The Hanoi University of Education was the first beneficiary of this project in Vietnam and we plan to expand this initiative to major universities across the country.
The OAI is a US$2 billion global program that provides colleges, and universities across the globe with world-class IT training tools at a fraction of the retail cost. This includes business application software, curriculum, professional development, certification and recruiting resources across every department and discipline. The goal of the program is to help institutions prepare students for the high-tech market by providing them with the most practical experience and knowledge of state-of-the-art business application software before they enter the workforce.
We see the OAI playing a timely and important role in addressing Vietnam’s strong need for skilled IT professionals. The OAI will help the Vietnamese government bridge the gap of IT training in the college and recruitment requirements set out by companies and organizations. It will also help address key national and international technology issues including increasing Internet access, improving IT learning capabilities, and building robust IT education communities.
The OAI is already a very successful program worldwide. We have the ‘tried and tested’ programs and partnerships with governments and academic bodies that have diversified and strengthened technology workforces across Asia, and we are bringing this experience and knowledge to Vietnam, underscoring our deep commitment to bridging the digital divide by improving and expanding IT learning.
How do you expect Oracle’s future in Vietnam?
With Vietnam planning to develop some 500,000 businesses in the coming years, coupled with the country’s WTO accession plans and a high economic growth of 8% annually – these conditions will help drive the growth of a large IT market, especially with the government of Vietnam identifying the IT sector as a spearhead economic industry. Vietnam’s strong information technology market growth – estimated at an impressive 30 per cent annually – also offers ample opportunity for a market leader like Oracle to continue its market momentum.
These growth conditions present a challenge for Vietnam business – they will need to prepare for the future, especially since they will face increasing foreign competition both locally and abroad. This is an unavoidable fact of a globalized and connected world, and it is necessary for Vietnam to be well-prepared for this ‘new world. Oracle’s long-term goal in Vietnam is to support Vietnamese businesses, especially small and medium ones, in their information technology development, in order to improve their competitiveness and to be a strategic partner with them in their business transformation.
