Song Be Rubber Company is a State-owned company of Binh Thuan People's Committee. After 23 years of development, it has become a strong enterprise making remarkable contribution to the socio-economic development. Vietnam Business Forum reporter interviewed Mr Do Quoc Quyt, Director of the company on the preparation of the company for the economic integration.
What are the achievements of the company in the past year and its plan for the coming years?
In the past year, the company has planted additional 836 hectares of rubber and 51.7 hectares of forest, bringing the total area of rubber to 3.526 hectares. The average productivity is 2.06 tonne/hectare. The output in 2005 was 3,617 tonnes, 126.91 per cent of the plan and 7.91 per cent more than previous year. Each worker exploited 6.85 tonnes/year. The company processed 6,522 tonnes of latex (mainly SVR 3L latex), or 120.34 per cent of the plan. With the application of ISO 9001:2000, the product quality is ensured of criteria TC VN 3769:1955 and meeting the demand of customers. The turnover was VND140,592 million (110.7 per cent of the plan) contributing VND17,888 million to the budget revenue. The average income of the workers was over VND3 million a month, 36.78 per cent more than 2004. The company has also won Golden Cup of Vietnamese trademarks.

The coming years, the company will expand the rubber area to 10,000 hectares, and participate in the co-operation of Binh Phuoc province and Kratie province of Cambodia in the development of rubber area, exploitation of mineral and raising cattle. The company will also expand business to other areas such as infrastructure, industrial zone, urban area, cattle raising, etc.

As Vietnam is going to join WTO, what are the advantages and difficulties for your company?
With accession to WTO, Vietnam will be free from discrimination in international trade. Tariffs will be less for Vietnamese exports, including rubber products. The export market will be more stable and with higher competitiveness. Vietnamese enterprises can attract more investments, technology transfer and financial support. However, with the amendments to the national laws incompatible with international laws, certain industries and sectors have some difficulties and certain disputes may occur in business activities.

How could you deal with those opportunities and challenges?
There must be a good strategy for the international economic integration. The company will promote the trademark in the world market and increase the export. The management and staff will be upgraded with experienced experts in international law and world trade to protect the interests of the company. The management of quality system and production cost will be ensured to increase the competitiveness. The company has become member of the Vietnam Rubber Association and is preparing to join the World Rubber Association to increase advantages in business activities. Therefore, I can say that Song Be Rubber Company is fully prepared for the economic integration.
