Car sales by 11 foreign-led automakers in Vietnam fell 14.6 per cent on year in the first three months of this year to 4,733 units, according to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA).
From January to March, Vidamco, which makes Daewoo cars, sold only 330 vehicles, down 72 per cent against last year’s sales of 1,180 units.
Sales of Vinastar, the manufacturer of Mitsubishi cars, dropped around 70 per cent to 243 vehicles while Mercedes-Benz Vietnam witnessed its sales falling 59.3 per cent to 114 units.
VMC, which makes Mazda, Kia and BMW cars, sold only 65 vehicles in the three-month period, down 52 per cent on year.
On the contrary with negative sales reports of other carmakers, Toyota still dominated the sales with 728 units in March, totaling 2,198 units in the three months, holding 46.4 per cent of the market share.
Mekong and Hino also saw sales increases in the first quarter of this year compared with the same period last year.
Ford, holding the second largest market share with 16.2 per cent, sold 767 units from January to March, down 1.3 per cent on year.
Last year, 11 foreign-invested carmakers sold 35,264 vehicles, down 12 per cent on year.
