Vietnam Seeks to Raise Purchasing Prices of Milk
The Department of Animal Husbandry has proposed the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to raise the purchasing price of fresh milk to VND5,000 per kilo from the current VND4,200per kilo throughout Vietnam.
“Purchasing prices of fresh milk in Vietnam are standing at the lowest levels in the region,” said an official from the department, clarifying that a kilo of fresh milk is offered at VND4,950 in Thailand, VND5,200 in China and as much as VND8,500 in South Africa.
“At VND4,200 per kilo price, local farmers obtain only VND250-300 in benefit,” said Nguyen Dang Vang, chief of the department, adding that this is the lowest profit.
He also stressed that raising purchasing prices of fresh milk is equitable to both farmers and processors when prices of almost all kinds of milk have been increasing.
The price increases will encourage local farmers to improve their dairy cow breeding and upgrade fresh milk production facilities which have not yet met the demand of local processors.
“With over 104,000 dairy cows producing 197,000 tons of fresh milk per year, domestic fresh milk supply currently meets only 13 per cent of the total demand of processors,” Vang said.
