VAMA Cars Sales Jump High in May

2:27:03 PM | 6/7/2006

The Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) has announced that its 15 company members’ car sales in May were up 33 per cent on month and 1 per cent on year to 3,499 units.

This is the second month in a row the VAMA enjoyed high car sales growth, a VAMA official said.

The sharp rise in car sales is mainly attributed to the penetration failure of imported used cars into Vietnam due to high taxes and tightened customs procedures, shattering hopes of car buyers to possess low-priced cars, he said.

The huge discounts and attractive promotional sales programs are also key factors to the rise, he added.

However, the aggregate sales volume in the first five months of this year still dropped 19 per cent to 12,156 units, principally resulting from unmarketable situations in first months of the year when policies on imported used cars were not clear.

“This growth trend together with handsome discounts and attractive sales promotions by carmakers will continue boosting our sales,” the VAMA official added.

Toyota continued dominating the Vietnamese car market in the five months with sales of 4,275 autos, holding a 35.2 per cent market share and 1,120 units in April, keeping 32 per cent market share.

The private-run Truong Hai Auto kept the second place with sales of 1,913 units between January and May, including 572 units in May.

Truck manufacturer Hino Vietnam enjoyed the highest sales growth in five months at 16 per cent while Vidamco, a GM-Daewoo branch, suffered the deepest fall of 67 per cent.
