Gas Prices to Rise Sharply in July

Gas traders in Vietnam have increased retail prices on cooking gas for July sales because of scarce import supplies and high import prices.

From July 1, each canister of 12 kg of gas will be added VND10,000-12,000, much higher than the initial anticipation of just VND2,000-5,000.

Saigon Petro, Gia Dinh Gas and Vinagas are now selling gas at VND168,000-170,000 per 12-kg gas canister while Petrolimex listed VND194,000 a 12-kg cylinder.

Hoanh Anh, director of Gas Petrolimex’s southern branch, said the supply sources at the moment are limited because of the incomplete periodical technical maintenance in several refineries in the world.

In addition, Thailand continues its tight control on gas export quotas, leading to a scarcer supply in the region.

Gas traders said the gas import price can increase by $20 to $490 a ton soon after growing by $20.

According to a gas firm, the price would increase further because the production at the country’s unique Dinh Co Gas Plant, which meets some 40 per cent of the domestic demand, has declined since May.
