Pepper Scarcity
According to the ministry of trade, the price of pepper has considerably risen since the early this year and will continue rising in the coming months as the pepper output in some countries is forecast to continue to fall.

The sole current supplier in the world is India. Indonesia has just sold some of its newly harvested pepper. Vietnam has sold 60% of this year’s output, leaving 25,000 tons in the reserve, thus not being able to join the market, while Brazil will not harvest its pepper until October .Additionally, the rumor is that Vietnam, Indonesia and India will have a bad pepper crop due to severe weather and high production cost.

China is emerging as the world largest pepper producing and consuming country and making its great efforts to develop its pepper industry into a key economic sector. As well as accelerating pepper production, China is considering its entry to the world pepper organization to take full advantages of this organization’s action programs. China’s annual pepper consumption reaches 25,000 tons and its production is expected to reach 30,500 tons in 2006.

According to Americans experts, the price of white pepper has increased due to the rising demands. European companies have begun making white pepper from black, which also results in pushing up the price of black pepper.

Vietnam’s pepper price rises as the world price rises. Vietnamese traders are offering between 750 and 775 USD higher for one ton of white pepper than that of black pepper .To date, Vietnam has the reverse of only 25,000 tons, which may continue to fall. Vietnam is seen as the world leading pepper supplier with competitive price and quality. According to the Vietnam pepper association, there may be a decline in pepper supply, however, thanks to the continuous expansion of the growing land, Vietnam still has abundant pepper for export and maintains to be the largest pepper exporter. Vietnam‘s pepper import grew from 9,000 tons in 1990 to 96,000 tons in 2005. Vietnam‘s current pepper output reache an average of100,000 tons per annum, accounting for 50% the world total output.
