Fertiliser Price Begins Rising in Southern Vietnam

According to the Vietnam Fertiliser Association, the demand for fertilisers is on the rise, especially in Mekong Delta provinces, but the price remains quite stable due to abundant supply sources.

At present, the urea fertiliser price is standing at a high level in northern Vietnam. A kilogram of Chinese urea fertiliser is sold at VND4,900 (31 US cents) and a kilogram of unpackaged urea fertiliser costs VND4,850. In Mekong Delta provinces, the price of urea has risen by VND90-100 a kg to VND4,790 and the price of DAP fertiliser has been increased by VND280 to VND5,700 a kg.

The demand for fertilisers in the summer-autumn crop and the winner crop is estimated at 900,000 tonnes.

Phu My Nitrogenous Fertiliser Plant resumed production after a period of time of stoppage for repair while Ha Bac Nitrogenous Fertiliser Plant still keeps stable production. Together with the import of 100,000 tonnes, the supply will meet the demand.

The supplies of other types of fertilisers still satisfy all needs. Each day, Vietnam Chemical Corp. (Vinachem) now produces nearly 2,000 tonnes of super phosphate fertilisers, over 300 tonnes of fused magnesium phosphate fertilisers, 200 tonnes urea fertilisers and more than 4,000 tonnes of NPK fertilisers.

Among the best-performing member companies under Vinachem, the Lam Thao Fertilisers and Chemicals Co. (Lafchemco) is now selling more than 1,000 tonnes of super phosphate fertilisers and nearly 2,000 tonnes of NPK fertilisers a day, and the Southern Fertilisers Co. (SFC) is currently sending 700 tonnes of super phosphate fertilisers and nearly 1,600 tonnes of NPK fertilisers to the market.

However, according to Vinachem, the inventory fertiliser volume is small in its member companies.

The in-stock fertiliser volume is smaller than that in the same period of 2005. The in-stock amount of fused magnesium phosphate fertiliser and NPK fertiliser is equal to 44.5 per cent and 45.3 per cent of the amount in 2005.

The price of fertilisers is forecast to fluctuate in the coming time because the new crop comes and the world oil price remains high.
