Some expected eighty percent of Vietnamese banks may have to buy top level domain.vn from speculators if they delay registration for such a domain, said state media.
After the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC), the registry for Vietnam that manages the entire .vn zone, offered the top level domain to all domestic and foreign institutions since August 14, more than 100 .vn domains which are names or abbreviations of big banks in Vietnam were registered within only three days.
However many amongst these .vn domains were registered by organizations which do not specialize in banking activities.
For example, A series of domains like VPbank.VND, Sacombank.vn, Seabank.vn, Agribank.vn, Icb.vn, and others were registered by Graphic Company, Kim Long Co,. Ltd and INGAS Co,. Ltd. Thus, Vietnam Bank for Private Enterprises (VPBank), Saigon Thuong Tin Commercial Bank (Sacombank), Southeast Asia Commercial Bank (SeABank), Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Agribank), Industrial and Commercial Bank of Vietnam (Incombank) have failed to own their .vn domains.
Some believed that those domains may be speculated in an attempt to earn profit. “If any speculation is detected, VNNIC will revoked those detected domains,” said a representative of VNNIC.
To date, only some Vietnamese banks have been offered the top level domain.vn, for example acb.vn, techcombank.vn and so on.
Meanwhile, most of big international banks have registered the domain.vn via Hi-Tek company who is a supplier of the domain.vn worldwide. For instance, Citibank has its own domains of citi.vn, citicorp.vn, citigroup.VND while deuschebank.vn is registered for Deutsche Bank.
