The CIO Indochina Conference and Awards 2006 opened in Hanoi on Monday to discuss development trends of the ICT industry and honor CIOs who contribute to the success of their organizations, as well as pick out the best ICT products and services.

Le Thanh Tam, managing director of IDG Vietnam & Indochina, the organizer, said the conference was an ideal forum for CIOs in Indochina and the world to exchange experience and knowledge on the development of the IT industry.

Participants at the conference were also briefed about case studies of enterprises that have earned success in IT applications. Speakers at the forum included representatives of the Ministry of Post and Telecom, Intel Corp., Prudential and Boeing.

The meeting was attended by 200 people, including high-ranking representatives of the Communist Party, the State and the Government of Vietnam, ministries, and representatives of Cambodia and Laos.

Seven top chief information officers in Indochina countries were honored, with six being Vietnamese. Ten best information and communication technology (ICT) products and services were also singled out by CIOs joining the conference.

Tam of IDG Vietnam & Indochina said the selection of the best CIOs was based on nominations and direct interviews as done in international selections.

The panel of judges is comprised of representatives of the Indochina governments and non-government organizations, and key criteria include impacts by the CIOs on corporate strategies, impacts on customers and impacts on finance.

The Indochina CIO Awards are to honor people for their innovation in business and leadership, not simply the awards on technology, Tam of the organizer said.

Meanwhile, the best IT products are selected by CIOs. This award program has involved more than 1,250 CIOs and chief executive officers (CEOs) in Vietnam and the rest of Indochina. Key criteria include price, quality, popularity and reliability, easy installation and implementation, and after-sale services.
