Ha Long Shipyard to Build Vietnam's Largest Ship
The northern Ha Long Shipyard, a key member of the state-owned Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin), has signed a contract to build a 54,000-ton cargo freighter for a Vinashin’s forwarding firm. This is the largest ship to be built by a local shipyard, the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.
The US$29-million carrier is scheduled to be delivered to Vinashin Ocean Shipping Co. (Vinashinlines), which is also affiliated to Vinashin, by late 2007. The vessel, designed by the Science and Technology Institute of Shipbuilding Industry, is 190m long and 32m wide and is powered by a 9,480-horsepower engine.
The construction of the ship is carried out under the overseeing of DNV, a Norwegian registration agency. Ha Long Shipyard, located in northern Quang Ninh province, is also building nine 53,000-DWT cargo ships for UK’s Graig Investments Group.
