The Government of Poland is currently considering granting a $290 million credit to Vietnam to assist the latter’s shipbuilding industry, state-run Vietnam News Agency said.

The credit commitment was mentioned during the meeting yesterday between Polish Prime Minister Marek Belka and Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in Helsinki, Finland, on the sidelines of the sixth ASEM Summit.

Poland has given $70 million to Vietnam to develop the latter’s shipbuilding industry. This development credit pact will expire by the end of this year.

During the Polish Prime Minister Marek Belka's visit to Vietnam in January, shipbuilders of the two countries signed four technology transfer contracts worth $200 million.

In addition to the shipbuilding development support, Poland is also weighing up the possibility of lending $80 million to a thermoelectricity project in Vietnam’s northern Quang Ninh province.

Vietnam is now the world’s11th largest shipbuilder.
