Vietnam’s largest shipbuilder Vinashin has revealed a plan to increase the total loading capacity of its ship fleet to 1.2 million by 2010, representing one-fourth of the national fleet's capacity by that time.

To realize the target, Vinashin will build ten 1,000-2,000-TEU container ships, four 75,000-100,000-ton oil tankers, five 25,000-50,000-ton oil product carriers, five LPG tankers, and six or eight multifunctional ships with a combined load of 175,000 DWT between now and 2010.

For the domestic market, Vinashin plans to complete its North-South shipping fleet by adding more ships and barges.

The group also plans to invest in three high-speed passenger ships for international lines and five others for the north-south routes with a capacity of 250-500 seats each.

Vinashin, or Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group in full, will also invest in port construction.

In an effort to sharpen its competitiveness, Vinashin will develop its information system, improve relations between goods owners, ship owners and ports, and apply state-of-the-art transport technologies.

At the same time, Vinashin will train captains, chief technicians, and managerial officers for businesses.

The group is expected to open main international and regional container transport lines and take part in the shipping of import-export goods, particularly farm produce, in the near future.
