Vietnam has become Southeast Asia’s biggest wood chip exporter to the Japanese market, said the Vietnam Association of Timber and Forest Products.

According to figures released by the association, Vietnam so far this year exported some 340,000 tons of wood chip (mainly from eucalyptus and acacia), an increase of 12 per cent over the same period in 2005, followed by Thailand with 240,000 tons.

Australia remained the worlds largest wood chip exporter to the Japanese market in the first six months of 2006 with 1.87 million tons, followed by South Africa, 1.4 million tons, and Chile, one million tons.

Experts said the price of imported wood chips in the Japanese market may increase by 2 per cent compared with early 2006 due to difficulties faced by suppliers producing hard wood chip from tropical forests.
