Vietnam was estimated to export US$484.75 million worth of goods to Canada in the past ten months of 2006, an on-year increase of 24.4 per cent, said the Vietnam Trade Office in Canada.

Footwear, apparel, seafood, cashew nut, coffee, tea, plastic products, rubber, and electronic products were Vietnam’s key export items to the foreign country.

During the time, Vietnam spent US$165.9 million on imports of fertilizer, tanned leather, pharmaceutical products, paper pulp, machines and technical and scientific equipment from Canada.

With these figures, Vietnam obtained a trade surplus of US$318.85 million with the North American country.

In early November 2006, Vietnamese Trade Minister Truong Dinh Tuyen worked with his Canadian counterpart David Emerson in Hanoi to discuss bilateral trade cooperation activities.

High on the agenda of their talks was the private economic sector, focusing on Canada's action plan on developing the sector and creating favorable conditions for boosting business operations in the 2007-10 period as part of the APEC Week’s framework.

In 2005, two-way trade between Vietnam and Canada soared 44 per cent on-year to $530 million, said the Vietnamese Trade Ministry. (Vietnam & World Economy, Vietnam Panorama)
