France asked Vietnam to invest in atomic energy for mutual benefit, during the February 5-9 visit to France by Ho Duc Viet, chairman of the Vietnam National Assembly's Committee for Science, Technology and Environment.

Viet and his entourage were received by French Senate President Christian Poncelet, who expressed his hope that the collaborative relationship between France and Vietnam will be further developed and that he can visit Vietnam as soon as possible.

Viet also met with the President of the Vietnam-France Parliamentarians Friendship Group Gerard Miquel, Member of Parliament and Rapporteur of the French Parliamentary Office for Scientific and Technological Assessment Claude Birraux, High Commissioner of the French Atomic Energy Commission Bernard Bigot and a number of other French Foreign Ministry officials.

Both host and guest exchanged experiences concerning developing bilateral ties in energy, environmental protection and creating legal documents on the issues.

According to Viet, Vietnam and France have achieved some good results in energy cooperation and now Vietnam has a big demand for energy to develop the economy. Vietnam wants to expand international cooperation in energy security while protecting the environment and ensuring safety.

France, meanwhile, has used atomic energy for 50 years and this kind of energy now accounts for 80 per cent of the country’s total energy network. With 59 nuclear reactors operating safely, France is now one of the nuclear energy powers in the world.

While in France, the Vietnamese delegation also toured many French establishments such as Atomic Energy Commission, Civaux Nuclear Center, AREVA Group, EDF, and a nuclear power equipment factory.
