Ha Long Shipbuilding Co, an affiliate of state-run Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin), successfully launched a 53,000-ton cargo ship in northern Quang Ninh province on February 16.

The freighter, christened Blue Diamond HL02, is the second of a series of fifteen 53,000-ton carriers to be built by Vinashin under its US$322.5 million contract with UK-based Graig Investments Group.

The US$26.5-million cargo ship, measuring 190m long and 32m wide and equipped with a 9,480 horsepower engine to travel at a speed of 14 nautical miles an hour, was designed by Denmark’s CarlBro built under the supervision of DNV, a Norwegian registration agency.

Graig Investments is a high potential partner for Vinashin, having proposed various shipbuilding contracts with Vietnam’s largest shipbuilder.
